Are England in the next Euros 2024?

England fell at the last hurdle in their bid to win Euro 2020, losing 3-2 on penalties to Italy in Sunday’s final.

Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka all missed in the shoot-out, as Italy extended their mammoth unbeaten run to 34 games.

“It is down to me,” England manager Gareth Southgate said of the penalty misses.

“I decided on the penalty takers based on what they have done in training.

“Nobody is on their own. We have won together as a team and it is on all of us together to not be able to win this game.

“In terms of penalties, it is my call and it totally rests with me.”

The positive is that all three of the players who missed penalties are likely to have another shot at winning the tournament next time around. Rashford is 23, Sancho is 21 and Saka is just 19.

The next men’s European Championship will be held in Germany in 2024.

It will start on 14 June and end on 14 July.

There is normally a gap of four years between tournaments, but there will be just three this time, due to Euro 2020 being pushed back a year because of the pandemic.

This will be the third men’s Euros held on German soil – although three games at Euro 2020 also took place in Germany.

The structure of qualifying is yet to be announced, but Germany will qualify as hosts, and the tournament will be contested by 24 teams.

The Euros are normally held in one country, but Uefa took a different approach for this year’s tournament, instead deciding to spread it across the continent.

The women’s Euros will take place next year, with England as hosts.

The tournament was supposed to happen this summer, but was rescheduled due to the pandemic. The Netherlands are the defending champions.

Later in 2022 the men’s team will contest the World Cup in Qatar, which is running in November and December to avoid the hot summer.

England defeat

Captain Harry Kane said after the defeat: “The boys couldn’t have given more.

“Penalties are the worst thing in the world when you lose them. It’s been a fantastic tournament, we should be proud and hold our heads up high, but it’s going to hurt now.

“It’s going to hurt for a while, but we’re on the right track and we’re building. Hopefully we can progress next year.

“We played against a very good side and got off to the perfect start. We maybe dropped a little bit too deep, sometimes when you score that early, it’s easy to soak up the pressure and hold onto that. They had a lot of the ball, but we looked fairly in control.

“We didn’t create too many chances, they got the breakthrough from a set piece and after that, it was probably 50/50. We had a few half chances in extra time and then penalties are penalties. We went through our process and the boys did everything they could, but it just wasn’t our night.

“Anyone can miss a penalty. We win together, we lose together and we’ll grow from it. It will give us more motivation to do well in the World Cup next year.”

FRANKFURT, Germany, Oct 9 (Reuters) - Defending champions Italy will face England in their Euro 2024 qualifying group, a repeat of last year's tournament final, following the draw on Sunday in Frankfurt's Festhalle.

The Italians, who beat England 3-2 on penalties at London's Wembley stadium in 2021 to lift the trophy will also play North Macedonia, who prevented Roberto Mancini's side from reaching the World Cup, and Malta in Group C.

"I was sure we would end up getting either England or France, but that's fine," Mancini said. "It's a workable group. There won't be any simple games but they are all still to be played."

Group B looks equally difficult with former champions Netherlands and current world champions France drawn alongside 2004 Euro winners Greece, Ireland and Gibraltar.

A total of 53 national associations were included in the draw with Germany already through as hosts.

Russia were not included following their invasion of Ukraine and the suspension of all Russian teams by European governing body UEFA.

Belarus, which has supported Russia's war in Ukraine, was included.

They will play Switzerland, Romania, Kosovo, Israel and Andorra in Group I.

This season's Premier League top scorer Erling Haaland's Norway will face three-times champions Spain in Group A, along with Scotland, Georgia and Cyprus.

"We avoid France, England and Serbia from pot two," said Norway coach Stale Solbakken. "We have to be satisfied with that, but we could also have been luckier."

The qualifying group matches will be played from March to November 2023 and the playoffs will take place in March, 2024.

The top two teams from each group qualify directly with the remaining three spots decided in the playoffs in March, 2024.

The 24-team finals will be held in 10 stadiums across Germany.
