Disable Autoplay
0
I'm sick of videos autoplaying when I open a tab and I see no way to disable that feature anymore. I've searched the forum, but any question regarding how to do that has been deleted! What the heck? This is an ability that needs to be reinstituted or some kind of instructions on how to disable them needs to be provided if it's buried somewhere in Chrome. The Chrome://flags brings up nothing to do with autoplay, there is no 'autoplay' when you search through the flags...Anyone have any suggestions other than another extension?

or use the website options to not auto play (facebook lets you do this)
or stop using websites that auto play and don't offer you an option to not.

What would you suggest I use in place of IMDB or Serious Eats or oh, gee, half a dozen very popular sites I visit occasionally that come blaring out of my speakers or cover the page?

I'm sorry, but I'd thought someone would have a more reasonable answer than snark. But thanks.

no "snark" intended.
I've never noticed IMDB blaring anything out. Do you have an ad blocker installed ?

I do have uBlock Origin installed, but it's only active on a few sites. And the blaring IMDB does is on the new movie releases when they cover half the page with the newest trailer. No matter how many times I try, I can't get the site to keep the mute and can't find a 'stop' on the autoplay on that either.

And I apologize, but between reading your answer and trying to respond, I had another tab that loaded and the embedded video started playing.

Id like chrome to actually have a working solution to websites spamming autoplay videos.. Yahoo is a pain with it. but i visit it for some news titles.. with adblocker running, i got them to stop on my phone using the 'play only when on wifi' option i guess but at home its tough luck.

IMO a browser should implament these features without people having to create accounts on all these autoplaying websites you visit.

It is not dollars worthy to do anything that is beneficial to the end user. It is all about making money for the website. Google Chrome is owned by Google which is owned by Alphabet Inc. They are paid big dollars to not autoblock sound or stop videos from playing. I am tired of Big Brother making revenue off my back. At this point I see my only choice is to go with an open source browser which is really for the people not against the people!

nighstmusic doe, thank you for calling out a low effort answer like that. I don't think they were being snarky, but they were giving the frustratingly basic and unhelpful answer that many online help forum "experts" give. Sorry, if someone has a problem with a product, the answer isn't always changing their habits. I mean it's like everyone just forgot the iPhone 4 antennagate where Steve Jobs just tells everyone to hold their phone differently as opposed to actually fixing the problem. Honestly, it's an answer much more akin to Microsoft or Apple's Support forums, and frankly I'm disappointed to see that quality of answer here.

With all that being said, there USED to be an option that disables autoplay as recently as April of 2019, however since then Google Chrome has once again inexplicably simplified and reorganized just about every setting it has, so those answers and articles don't help anymore.

In addition to that, Google hasn't updated their search algorithms to prioritize relevant results that aren't out of date already. So it's really hard finding answers that actually apply to current problems nowadays. 9 times out of 10 I'll look up an issue and get a solve that was posted 11 years ago. Yeah REAL BIG HELP, Google.

And I think some "help" posters need to learn the difference between trying to help and wasting someone's time. If I ask for help about a broken leg, and someone tries to give me advice about my wrist while telling me I shouldn't do things to hurt myself, that's not help, that's wasting both of our time.

I've stopped using Chrome to browse my news feeds. Instead, I use Microsoft Edge browser: the ability to stop videos from auto-playing is built into the browser (it's in the advanced settings - pretty much the way it used to be in Chrome). I can also run ad blocking extensions that I use in Chrome (primarily uBlock Origin). I know that's not a Chrome solution, but I stopped holding my breath for Chrome to re-implement it's stop auto-play features; at this point, I see no sign of it happening.

Disabling autoplay should be a simple, standard, cross-application feature. I suppose they lose ad revenue with this hence the total removal of such an option? Lame.

Their business is to make money. It is silly to gripe about that. Like anything else, if there is a better product, use it. And, if you can't find a better product, then realize that there is always a price for free products. They have employees and stock holders as well as customers.
