Grown american organic superfood powder reviews

The News frequently reports to us on the rising tide of illness due to poor diet in the U.S., and experts have their views on what maybe some of the reasons for this.

Simply being unable to access fresh food, fruits, vegetables, and unawareness about how to prepare wholesome food, expense, and lack of exercise can all lead to insufficient nutrition, weight gain, and other dire health-related issues.

So what are Americans doing about it?

Well, we know that there is a huge area of the health-products market which is encouraging people that there is an easier way to get your daily nutritional needs met, and just one of those companies is Grown American.

They have developed a natural greens superfood supplement from Van Drunen Farms organically sourced from local farms. Here’s my take on their flagship supplement, Grown American Superfood review.

Are this vitamin and antioxidant-packed superfood the answer?

Grown american organic superfood powder reviews

‘A scoop a day helps keep the doctor away is the opener for the Grown American Superfood, a product that claims to make it easier for you to increase your intake of fruits and vegetables (with an underlying message ‘to help to combat the rise of obesity, diabetes and heart disease).

Whilst a noble approach to marketing, this wholesomely-packaged product interests me for more reasons, so I’m taking a closer look at the company and the product in my search for the ultimate Super Greens powder. Why should we choose this product over the multitude of others on offer?

What is particularly special or different about this formulation, is it more competitive in price?

Background on Grown American LLC

“Are you eating Superfood or Super junk?” asks the landing page of Grown American.

This clever marketing approach continues with the promise that their product, Grown American Superfood, can help you ‘double your servings of fruit and vegetables daily.

I suppose if you were eating zero fruit and vegetables, it may be the case that a powdered form could deliver the nutrition you are lacking. Because further down the page, we read that Grown American Superfood gives you 1.5 servings. Hang on, I thought we were supposed to eat 5 servings a day of fruits and veggies? And most of us aren’t doing that…

At Grown American, they very cleverly use the phrase ‘superfood fruits and veggies, perhaps to give the impression that ‘their’ fruits and veggies are somehow better than those available to you to buy at the store, the market, or direct from the farm.

However, from all the research available, people need to eat a more Mediterranean-style diet, including fresh vegetables, fruits, and wild-caught fish. Where has this notion of superfoods even come from?

There’s a sense that you may be able to stop the ticking time-bomb of ill health (read diabetes or heart disease) by simply taking a scoop of powders in some water instead of turning around some poor lifestyle choices, eating more fresh whole foods and exercising more.

Grown American Superfood Ingredients

So what’s inside? The website and packaging tell us that Grown American Superfood is USDA certified organic and grown in the US, which must appeal to some customers, but what goes into this formulation of Super Foods?

Let’s take a look at the label to see for ourselves. We are told there are 30+ organic fruits and vegetables in every scoop (let’s remind ourselves these are powdered), and that it’s better than fresh!

But no amounts are given on the label and, what’s more, the ingredients label seriously lacks information.

Each serving is 8 grams. This contains: 5 Organic Concentrated Leafy Greens: Kale, Spinach, Wheatgrass, Barley grass, Alfalfa grass 8 Organic Superfruits: Blueberry, Strawberry, Cranberry, Orange, Cherry, Lemon, Pear, Apple 6 Organic Vegetables: Broccoli, Celery, Brussel Sprouts, Carrot, Green Bell Pepper, Pumpkin 12 Organic Sprouts: Amaranth, Quinoa, Millet, Buckwheat, Garbanzo Bean, Lentil, Adzuki, Flax, Sunflower, Pumpkin, Chia & Sesame

Ok, so I do count 31 ingredients there, 11 vegetables, and 8 fruits. And the rest are sprouts, which do have nutritional value, but I already feel a little misled on the promise of 30+ organic fruits and vegetables.

Further down on the site under a page called ‘FAQs’ I found that the manufacturers concede there is a ‘full serving of vegetables and half a serving of fruit’. I’m not convinced that this makes up the promise of ‘doubling’ my intake daily unless I consume less than none.

I’ll take a look at one ingredient – blueberries – which could be considered a superfood due to their highly nutritious antioxidant properties and reported nootropic properties (research is ongoing). If we have an 8g serving and 31 ingredients, then 8 divided by 31 equals 0.25g.

This is obviously an estimation as we haven’t been told how much of each ingredient is included in a scoop/serving. So therefore, if I’m to look at the recommended dose of fruit such as blueberries (examine.com suggests 5.5g-11g (powdered) equating to roughly 60g fresh blueberries.

So you can see how if we take this to be an assumption for each of these ingredients, there really isn’t enough of each powdered fruit or vegetable to be gaining any of the individual plant’s properties.

How Does Grown American Superfood Taste?

I will be upfront on this one and say I don’t know, I haven’t tried it.

They helpfully give some recipes on their website should you need to include the powder in other food combinations to either hide the taste or just change up the way you take them.

Side Effects

As with all new products, I would caution against taking it first thing in the morning when your system needs a gentle introduction to the day. I would perhaps consider drinking this after your usual breakfast or a little later in the day, just in case you experience any digestive discomfort.

I would also check the label for anything which you have already experienced a side effect.

Does Grown American Superfood Actually Work?

Ok, it’s crunch time. I was prepared to give this product the benefit of the doubt but have already admitted that I’m disappointed by the claims twice, I have to say I’m highly doubtful of this product has any effect.

Grown american organic superfood powder reviews

The manufacturer claims there are superfoods inside, but the amounts are so tiny. The full scoop (8g) only contains a portion of veggies and half a portion of fruit. Half a portion of fruit!

I’m no mathematician but this is really not adding up to look like a great product!

Livestrong.com tells us that a portion of blueberries is half a cup. So I need to eat half a half-cup (1/2 cup) of blueberries to achieve this. That’s about 4 blueberries. I’m no mathematician, but this is not adding up to look like a great product!

The grains are a nice addition, but I also struggle not to see the addition of so many as ‘filler.’

Grown American Superfood Customer Reviews

To boost my confidence in this product, I will look at some genuine customers of Grown American Superfood and their reviews.

On the Grown American site:

more energy and less hunger at noon when [she] take[s] this product in the morningGloria
I love to add it to smoothies for a bright and fruity tasteNikeya

So far, so unconvinced. Many reviewers claim that it somehow replaces the process of juicing or blending fresh fruit or vegetables.

Over on Amazon.com there is the usual slew of reviews. There are 89 customer reviews of which 47% give five stars. 24% give one star.

just received my package and am shocked at how small a quantity you get for the price– 2 stars
it tastes more like alfalfa than apples– 2 stars
tastes like apples mostly… I did notice a difference in my energy for the day– 4 stars

Money Back Guarantee / Returns Policy

Grown American offers a 60-day money-back guarantee if you are not happy. They also have a ‘risk-free trial’, with a great number of free items offered (a gift valued at $50, they don’t say what this is), a free cookbook, a free 14-day supply, and a free shaker cup. However, reviews on Amazon state that you also get signed up for a $99.90 30-day (30-scoop bag).

It seems the ‘enrollment’ process has too much room for confusion, either from the customer’s end or in terms of fulfillment and shipping, letting people down. As a consumer, I want to see that I’m getting a better deal than this.

Where to Buy Grown American Superfood?

You can buy American Grown at their own online shop here or at Amazon.

Grown American Superfood Cost, Is It Worth the Price?

What is the cost of Grown American Superfood, and can it be classed as value for money compared to buying fresh food and preparing it from scratch?

The one-time purchase is $99.90 (USD) plus $8.95 shipping. This is for 30 scoops (a 30-day supply). There are two other ‘enrollments’ (I feel like I’m signing up to Cub Scouts!), the $8.95 introductory offer and $159.80 for 60-days.

I’m going to be bold and say that for what is actually included in the ingredients list I’m not impressed at this price.

It’s really not a nutritionally impressive list of ingredients, they haven’t been clear about the amounts of each ingredient in a scoop, and even if I did think they were powerful plant ingredients, there simply isn’t enough of each in an 8g serving to be making a huge difference.

I would just like to see manufacturers being more transparent in their labeling so that I can make a more educated decision when it comes to my purchasing choices.

Grown American Superfood FAQs

Here are the frequently asked questions about the Grown American superfood supplements.

Is Grown American Superfood gluten free?

According to Grown American, their superfood is vegan, gluten-free, soy-free, and dairy-free. It contains no fat, no fillers, no added sugar, no cholesterol, and contains no GMOs.

Is Grown American superfood good for diabetics?

What does Grown American superfood taste like?

Reports from consumers suggest the taste is a little grassy. This is often a problem with greens powders as many raw ingredients are not great on the palate.

Is Grown American Superfood a scam?

No, they are a legit company. However, in 2018 there were a lot of upset customers who felt they had been tricked into a “free trial.” Grown American still runs a “free trial” subscription (or as they call it, “Preferred Enrollment”), so be sure to read the terms and conditions to know what you're getting into.

Grown America Superfood Verdict

There is no doubt that the general public is experiencing a crisis in health and nutrition at the moment. Read any news article in the health sphere, and there will always be an underlying message that if people would just make better food choices and change sedentary lifestyles, there would be improvements in health outcomes for all.

But it is a stretch of these facts to say that powdered fruit and vegetables (1.5 servings a day) are going to turn this calamitous situation around. It doesn’t take a dietitian to be dismayed at this correlation.

I think it’s fine and acceptable to talk about the health needs of Americans, but I think it puts you in danger of making outrageous claims when you put the two things together in your marketing.

Add this to the fact that we don’t know how much of each ingredient has gone into the formulation, I won’t be putting my hand in my pocket to buy Grown American Superfood. I want to buy a product that I can have faith in, and this isn’t the one for me.

A big issue for me, too as readers of my blog will know, I dislike this practice of hiding the ingredient amounts. I am much more likely to try alternative brands like SuperGreen Tonik or possibly Green Vibrance.

LifeHacker Guy Greens Recommendation

Some Call This An "Extreme" Step...

Most super greens supplements are disappointing.

I learned this the hard way. After creating this blog in 2018, I spent months buying and testing all the most popular brands.

I wasn’t happy with the results so I did something you might call "extreme"....

In 2019 I created my own brand that ticks every single box of what I look for in a super greens product:

  • No hidden ingredient amounts - we have full disclosure labelling, so you know EXACTLY whats inside
  • Ingredient amounts that make a difference - we include the minimum effective amounts supported by research, and most of the time, MORE
  • Ingredients that help immunity, boost mental clarity and shake off brain fog - making for a much more productive and happy lifestyle

No more worrying about ineffective ingredients or too low dosages. I finally have a product I KNOW does the job it’s made to do.

I use it every day and, after years of battling Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS), I now have my energy (and my life!) back.

The good news? I made my brand available to the public so you can see and feel the difference for yourself.
