Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II is an upcoming first-person shooter game developed by Infinity Ward and published by Activision. It is a direct sequel to the 2019 reboot, and will serve as the nineteenth installment in the overall Call of Duty series.[1] It is scheduled to be released on October 28, 2022,[2] for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. Gameplay[edit]Modern Warfare II brings several massive changes to the Call of Duty gameplay across the board. Several new changes have been touted, such as advanced AI system in the campaign and co-op modes, water physics and swimming mechanics, as well as an overhauled vehicle system.[3][4][5] The Gunsmith system is also given a revamp, allowing players to fine-tune specific attachments to suit their playstyles.[6] Modern Warfare II multiplayer features several new game modes: Knockout, where two teams attempt to capture a package with limited lives; and Prisoner Rescue, where an attacking team attempts to extract a hostage while a defending team prevents them by fortifying defenses around the hostage.[7] The cooperative Special Ops mode is also confirmed to return.[8] Premise[edit]Modern Warfare II is a continuation of the 2019 reboot entry, and features several returning characters: Captain John Price (Barry Sloane), Sergeant Kyle "Gaz" Garrick (Elliot Knight), Lieutenant Simon "Ghost" Riley (Samuel Roukin), Sergeant John "Soap" MacTavish (Neil Ellice), CIA Station Chief Kate Laswell (Rya Kihlstedt), and Urzikstani rebel leader Farah Karim. New characters include Mexican Special Forces Colonel Alejandro Vargas (Alain Mesa) and CEO of private military company Shadow Company, Commander Phillip Graves. The game takes place in 2022, three years after Price forms the elite multinational counter-terrorist unit Task Force 141 with Gaz, Soap, Ghost and Farah; Vargas joins the team as its latest member. After a missile strike from the United States kills a foreign general, 141 is called in to contain the situation and prevent further escalation, while also combating the terrorist organization Al-Qatala and the drug cartel known as Las Almas. Development[edit]Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II is being developed by Infinity Ward alongside a new version of the battle royale title Call of Duty: Warzone called Warzone 2.0, with both games using a new version of the IW engine.[9] The new upgraded engine features a physically based material system, a new hybrid tile-based streaming system, a new PBR decal rendering system, world volumetric lighting, 4K HDR, as well as a new GPU geometry pipeline.[10] Marketing[edit]Reveal[edit]In February 2022, Activision confirmed that a sequel to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare would be released in 2022, alongside a new iteration of the free-to-play battle royale title Call of Duty: Warzone.[9] The game's title, Modern Warfare II, and logo were revealed on social media in April 2022.[1] A month later, Activision released another teaser, which featured the key arts of the main characters of the game, as well as a release date of October 28, 2022.[2] On June 2, 2022, a live-action trailer was released, on the same day, Steam responded to a tweet from the official Call of Duty Twitter account, strongly suggesting the game would be released on Microsoft Windows via the Steam platform, in addition to Battle.net.[11] The first trailer for the game was released on June 8, showcasing gameplay from the campaign mode, as well as confirming the game's release on Steam, Battle.net, and the eighth and ninth generation consoles.[12] Modern Warfare II marks the first time since 2017's Call of Duty: WWII that a Call of Duty title released on the Steam platform.[13] Release[edit]The multiplayer beta for Modern Warfare II will release from September 16 to September 26 across all platforms before the launch on October 28, 2022.[14] Pre-orders of all editions grant "early" access to the open multiplayer beta. The Vault Edition grants access to a "Red Team 141" operator pack, a "FJX Cinder Weapon Vault" pack, plus access to the Battle Pass of a Season for Modern Warfare II (dependent on the time of purchase), and double XP tokens. In addition, the Vault Edition also includes the "Ghost Legacy Pack", which grants 12 Ghost operator skins and 10 weapon blueprints for the M4A1 assault rifle for use in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Call of Duty: Warzone. Unlike the previous cross-gen titles, Modern Warfare II offers no standard editions for the eighth generation consoles, but only a cross-gen edition for all platforms, in addition to the Vault Edition. Pre-ordering will also grant early access to the campaign a week early before official launch.[15][16] Notes[edit]
