Hi,

I have just installed Corel Draw 8 on a new machine. It's a Dell Dimension XPS T500 running Windows 98. Sometimes when the machine boots up I lose the system sounds and when this happens Corel Draw won't start up. I get a number of error messages as follows (the title of the message box is in brackets). These occur during the "Initialising Color Management System" section of the load:

I have called Technical Support (I'm in the UK) and all they can say is that it might be a clash with the sound drivers. The sound card is a TBS Montego II. Dell can't offer any help either, they have no alternative drivers for the sound card. I have re-installed Corel Draw several times and also the sound card drivers. This is frustrating to say the least. Can any of you help me with this before something gets thrown out of the window.

I'm guessing from your post that this is a unique event and happens only when you've lost the system sounds. Which makes it difficult to test with Windows in Safe Mode which would be the ideal way to test this.

  1. But you could go to the system app and see if there are any conflicts indicated,
  1. To be certain of a few things, how many fonts do you have on your machine? You should have less than 400. Also, check your filters directory for file sizes. Are they zero k bytes?
  1. If this is indeed a unique event - then, and if the system loses the sounds upon boot - there would be a 'system' problem and I would think the issue would have to be resolved at that level. Try moving the graphics accelerator slider to left by about two notches and keep nudging. Reboot and restart Draw 8.
  1. Look for a video configuration file and find whatever manual Dell has given you for the video (what is it, by the way) and try disabling various features enabled by enhancements of the board. Turn them all off at first and if that helps, selectively turn them on.

This should at least give you a few approaches to the issue. Let us know how it goes.

This is an indication that the problem lies with your setup rather than Draw itself. Corel has written an excellent document for troubleshooting and tuning up Windows 95; it should help under Win 98 as well. Even though it's titled as being meant for fixing IPFs, it can work to clear up general problems like this also:

I also wanted to mention (but had to find the url first) - Dell has an online community and user to user is usually a pretty good way to resolve these kinds of issues. Especially since your machine is so new. Here's the site address:

It happens randomly (depending on the order in which drivers are loaded?) when the system is started (or re-started). The "indication" that it has gone wrong is the absence of the "Volume Control" loudspeaker icon in the system tray. I know that when that happens I have lost the system sounds and also that Corel will not load. Sometimes it happens three or four times in a row, other times it boots up first time without a problem.

All OK in there.

216 fonts, no zero-length files.

I don't think it is graphics-related but sound driver-related.

I've truned the acceleration off now. Video is NVidia RIVA TNT (Diamond Viper with 16MB RAM).

But, if it happens as a consequence, for example, of the order the drivers are loaded in, the sound board is conflicting with something. Your video board may be accessing for example, an area that com ports access. This is not uncommon. And thereby causing the difficulty. By moving the accelerator switch to the left - you cut down on the number of tricks your video board plays to do what it does and thereby may remove the conflict itself.

That's why I suggested this. It's also a way to test by screening out various accelerator techniques used by the video board. Pleas give it a try.

Sorry to hear that :-( At this point I can only recommend hounding Dell's site for the answer. Not something I like doing if I can help resolve an issue here.

I have disabled the sound drivers in Control Panel, System, Device Manager, "Sound, video and game controllers". I haven't had any problems since, execpt of course I've got no sounds. So I can either draw pictures or listen to music but not both at the same time!

I shall be getting on to Dell again but they have already said that there aren't any alternative drivers for this sound card. Thankd for your help.

Bummer :-(

Still - I think going to that DellTalk area of the Dell Site and asking can't help --- users post in that section and some recognize and have fixed various Dell-unfixable errors on their own machines.

Nothing useful from the Dell site. Could you explain to me what the error messages mean that CorelDraw is producing - as it seems that it is down to me to try to resolve this and it might point me in the right direction. They are all in the original message at the start of this thread.

Sometime these messages appear when the system boots up as well so CorelDraw is doing something at that time as well.

If you're re-booted, Draw isn't in the boot process.

Here's something to try, hold down the F8 key when launching the program. If it goes well, you'll get a message about over-writing files with factory defaults.

See if that helps.

Well Draw or some part of draw is certainly is doing something when I boot up because I get some of the same error messages. I don't have a list of what they are but something like the "Error opening C:\Corel\Graphics8\Custom\coreldrw.cpl file" that I mentioned earlier.

Sorry - just the same.

Can you tell me what the error messages mean to help me understand what is happening? Why can't Draw open some of it's own files? What are the .cpl files anyway?

Also - in one of my conversations with the Tech Support people at Corel it was suggested that I copy the entire CD to a temporary directory, reboot in safe mode and install from that directory instead. That didn't make any difference but I have just been doing a search for files ending in .CPL and have found one called VERSCPL.CPL in that temporary directory. This is a Control Panel Extension file which allows me to control Corel Versions. This file has *not* been installed into the control panel. I definately saw it in there a long time ago in one of the early installs (I have done several by now) but it is not installed in there any more.

Is this significant?

Also - could the fact the Corel use the .CPL file extension for their own files (lots of them) have a bearing on this somewhere.

I repeat that sometimes on a re-boot I get similar error messages as described earlier.

What card do you have now? I see from their sales area of their web-site that they recommend a specific sound board for a specific video board. Actually - I was wondering about both - which sound card and which video?

If you're within your 30 days they have a customer agreement for satisfaction and upgrade - in other words you can return your purchase or you can get a different sound board for the 'at the time of purchase' upgrade price by swapping out the board.

Something related to Corel is running on boot-up? (I presume you mean Windows start-up rather than machine boot-up.)

Ok, take a look in your Start|Programs>Startup folder for anything Corel-y. If you find it, remove it.

Then go Start|Run and type WIN.INI in the box and press Enter. See the lines that start "run=" or "load="? Anything after the = sign?

Then go Start|Run and type SYSTEM.INI and look in the section marked

[386Enh]

for any VxDs that look as though they're Corel-y things.

Fancy a spot of Registry digging? <g>

Ok, go Start|Run and type REGEDIT in the box and press Enter.

Work your way down to all of these and check that nothing Corel-y is in there:

If you _do_ find something and you're not familiar with backing up the Registry before editing it, come back and ask for help before you change anything.

Lastly, (for the moment <g>) go Start|Programs>MS-DOSPrompt and type

and press Enter.

Have you tried launching the program while holding down the F8 key?

Also, I'm wondering if you have done a clean uninstall of the program as yet - cleaning out all \tmp directories and removing any directories the program may have left behind.

Then, make sure you have nothing running at startup - temporariarily remove everything from you startup file. Then reboot and re-install.

See if that helps.

No. Corel CPL files are palette files. The fact that you get a message that one is missing is in itself not a big deal. Open the palette browser docker and reload the default palette.

Yes - done that, twice, once from within safe mode from a directory on the hard disk. (See my earlier message below)

The safe-mode install has surely dobe this already?

Again, what do the error messages mean? Here is something CONCRETE that is going wrong, it would surely be good to look into why these messages are appearing and then maybe I can see what has gone wrong. All this re-install, reboot and try again stuff is very tedious and doesn't prove anything immediately because the fault does not always appear on a re-boot, Sometimes it happens most times I reboot, other times it is only once in every 4 or 5 times.

But when I get the error messages CorelDraw won't run. When it doesn't go wrong I don't get any error messages. There can't be a "hard" problem like a missing file because I can re-start Windows and it will all work fine again.

Could you tell me what the error messages mean? They are all at the top of this thread - Thanks.

This system came with a nVidia Riva TNT which I think is also know as a Diamond Viper, it has 16MB RAM. The sound card is a TBS Montego II.

Well I can try that - they were not helpful the last time I called. I think I am still *just* within the 30 days. I'd still likje to find out what is going wrong in order to positively identify where the problem lies.

I just went back to their site. Now they appear to be offering Yamaha XG 64V Wavetable Sound with all systems. No choices or roll-downs that say one board or another with this or that video)

Is that what you have? If not, you might ask about whether or not this could 'fix' your system. Call their tech Support - as I recall they were excellent and you're under the 30 days and you probably have next day o nsite support for the first year (maybe not?) At any rate --- re-explain your situation. Be honest and tell them this just doesn't work - having a system that crashes sometimes on boot and disabled the sound. Ask if switching to the Yamaha 1) would help 2) can be done and 3) for return # and mailing address.

I have always found Dell, personally, to be really cooperative. When you call, also note you had called before. Do this before your 30 days runs out.

I know you must think we are all ignoring this question. OK, so we are just a little. :-) I'm checking into the others ... it seems the coders put those messages in and then forgot to hand out the decoder rings. In the meantime, here's a boilerplate on the 5000 messages.

\========================= The 5000 series of error messages occur as a direct result of a memory conflict in your system. Usually such conflicts are object- or file-specific and can be easily isolated. When such an error occurs, and CorelDRAW will allow, save your work and exit from DRAW and Windows. In all cases, another contributing factor to the generation of 5000-series errors is inadequate space for Windows to create temporary files. These files are created by Windows as you work in DRAW applications. The TMP files will be stored in a subdirectory whose location is determined by a line in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file. The best way to determine where these files are is to run the SET command at the DOS prompt and to look for a line stating TEMP=... Check this directory for TMP files and delete any that exist from DOS , not through Windows. Windows requires 5-10 MB of free disk space on the drive where TMP files will be created.

These errors occur because of a memory conflict on your system. Fault can be easily isolated because the message is either file- or object- specific. If the error message returns, follow the instructions below to isolate the offending object and delete it. Check whether you have adequate Temp space. If not, delete .TMP files. (TMP files are created on your system while you work in CorelDRAW.)

5001

These errors occur as a result of two conflicting pieces of data. Exit from CorelDRAW and delete the CORELDRW.INI file. When you restart CorelDRAW, this file will be re-created.

5002

These errors occur as a result of two conflicting pieces of data. Exit from CorelDRAW and delete the CORELDRW.INI file. When you restart CorelDRAW, this file will be re-created.

Locating and dealing with corrupted objects

· Open the problem file. Select one object, then use Shift+Tab to scroll through the objects on the page. Sometimes a very small object that you didn't notice will become selected. This object may be corrupted. Try deleting the object or dragging it off the page. Then save the remaining objects using Selected Only on the Save screen. · Another way to located a corrupted files is to marquee select half of the objects, then print, save, export as required, using the Selected Objects Only feature. If a problem occurs again, marquee select a smaller number of objects until you locate the corrupted object by process of elimination. Then try to delete the object. · Try saving the file as a version 4.xx file or exporting as CGM if you are having trouble saving, printing or exporting. Re-open or import the file and try again. · For large files, often the error can be reproduced by selecting the offending object and copying it to the clipboard. To isolate the object, marquee select half of the objects on your page and copy them to the clipboard. If no error occurs, marquee select another area and try the same. Once the error occurs, you will need to select fewer objects from that area and continue with the copying process until you have located the offending object. Once identified, delete and recreate it. \=========================
