These are 5 of the best apps to help you pack for your next trip

Jelisa Castrodale | USA TODAY |1:30 pm EDT September 16, 2015

When I'm trying to pack for a trip, my entire house looks like an Office Depot exploded inside it, with Post-It Notes and scraps of paper all over the place. Most of them are just an assortment of nouns: "passport" stuck to the front door, "chargers, cords" taped to the bathroom mirror, "jacket?" on the kitchen counter. But there are a number of apps that can simplify the packing process, keep track of everything you've already placed inside a suitcase, remind you not to walk out the door without your wallet and even make wardrobe suggestions based on the weather at your destination. And, with all of that information on your phone, you don't have to worry that a poorly timed blast from the air conditioner will scatter your packing plans across the living room.

PackPoint (Free/$2.99 Premium Version) Almost every packing app has some variation on a list, so they each have to provide additional features to differentiate themselves from their most basic competitors, a pen and paper. PackPoint has users enter their gender, destination and the dates and length of their stay, before asking them to select what activities (including everything from working, formal dinners, beach outings or traveling with a baby) they'll be doing during the trip. It then searches for the weather forecast and generates a customizable list of things that you might need. The Premium version allows users tocreate their own lists and activities, and will also sync that data with other organizational apps like TripIt or Evernote.

PackingPro ($2.99) This app is the most comprehensive, most detail-oriented and at least initially the most complicated. But it's also the most customizable, allowing travelers to create lists not only for themselves, but for their travel companions, children, spouses or even their pets. It also allows you to have a separate list of things you need to buy before you leave and keep track of anything you'll need to pick up or take care ofduring the trip. Plus, ithas a catalog of 800 items that it will use to generate its own suggestions. PackingPro's most helpful features might be its alerts, though. You can set it up to beep frantically (or at least noticeably) if you try to leave your house without something on your list, or to sound an alarm at a set time to, say, remind you to pack your toothbrush after youscrub your teeth on the morning that you leave.

Stylebook ($3.99) This app will make you feel like Cher Horowitz from Clueless, minus the plaid schoolgirl skirts (unless that's your thing). Although it will take some time to set up you do need to photograph and catalog the items in your own closet once you've set up a searchable database of your own wardrobe options, it makes it easy to pack without having to upend your entire dresser, or to plan what you're going to wear in Chicagowhen you're on your lunch break in Charlotte. For people like me who try tostick to one color scheme when they travel (black, it's always black), Stylebook is a great way to mix and match different looks, accessories and shoes before you try to stuff them all in your suitcase.

Travel List ($1.99) For those who do rely on pens, paper and Post-It Notes, Travel list is the one that most closely mimics that simple, minimalist experience. As you create lists and check items off after putting them in your bag, it will only show what is left, which adds to its simple, uncluttered design. Travel List also has customizable alerts for both one-time or regular alarms, which, as its site suggests, could remind you to recharge your camera batteries every night when you return to your hotel, then to pop them back into the camera before you walk out the door in the morning. Also, Travel Listis the only one of these apps that currently hasan Apple Watch version.

TripList (Free/$2.99 Pro Version)Yes, TripList lets you plan activities and set up packing lists for multiple users, but its easy customization also lets you keep track of the things that you take on every trip, and then reuse that checklist every time you start to plan. It also shows the percentage of items you've already packed (Still at 14%, Josh? WHAT HAVE YOU BEEN DOING ALL DAY?) and lets you keep a running To Do list of things that need to be taken care of before you hit the road. The Pro version will also sync with TripIt, and will sync your lists to all of your iOS devices for easy cross-referencing.Seriously, Josh. Get busy.
