The Athletic’s rankings of every FBS college football team are back, and there’s a new 131st member this year.

The 2020 rankings began with just 76 teams due to the pandemic and momentarily canceled seasons. The 2021 season got back to full strength at 130, and now we’re at 131, as James Madison has moved up to the FBS and the Sun Belt. A hearty welcome to the Dukes.

The 2022 season comes at a time of change. Name, image and likeness, and the transfer portal are in full swing. Nick Saban was finally toppled by one of his former assistants last year (two, actually). Major conference realignment is on the horizon. Media deals will change how we watch games.

And yet, the top of the college football rankings have familiar faces. Saban referred to last year’s College Football Playoff finalist Alabama team as going through a rebuilding year. Georgia and Ohio State remain stacked. Can anyone challenge them? Elsewhere, conferences like the Pac-12, Big 12 and ACC feel wide-open. The rankings outside of the top three are tough to order, but that’s the fun of the sport.

Will the same teams make the Playoff again? Who could surprise and win a conference? Who will take the Group of 5 New Year’s Six spot? And who is No. 131?

With Week 0 games finally here, let’s get into it.

If it was possible to show, the gap between Nos. 3 and 4 here would be massive. You can make the case for close to a dozen teams to be ranked fourth after Alabama, Ohio State and Georgia, but there has to be someone.

Ten wins would not be a bad year at most schools, but Dabo Swinney raised the bar at Clemson. This season, with new coordinators on offense and defense and questions at quarterback, will tell us if the Tigers can get back to the elite level.

Utah is the Pac-12 favorite with quarterback Cameron Rising and running back Tavion Thomas behind a strong offensive line, though the Utes have big defensive holes to fill and a tricky schedule that opens at Florida. Michigan is coming off a Playoff appearance, and quarterback Cade McNamara made big strides as the season went on. The Wolverines should still run the ball well, but replacing two game-changing defensive ends will be difficult. Notre Dame’s offensive line will be among the best in the country and tight end Michael Mayer is an All-America candidate, but how will new quarterback Tyler Buchner handle the spotlight?

Texas A&M has a lot of offseason hype despite coming off an 8-4 season, as it signed one of the highest-rated recruiting classes ever. Devon Achane is one of the best running backs in the country, but will the Aggies’ quarterback play be enough?

Picking the Big 12 feels impossible, with defending champion Baylor, new-look Oklahoma and defending runner-up Oklahoma State all even. The Sooners brought in Clemson defensive coordinator Brent Venables to be the head coach, but with UCF transfer quarterback Dillon Gabriel and his former offensive coordinator Jeff Lebby, the Sooners should still have an explosive offense.

Oregon has a tough opener against Georgia in Atlanta, but Dan Lanning inherits a ready-made program and a favorable schedule after that. NC State has all the pieces for an ACC championship season, starting with quarterback Devin Leary. Can the Wolfpack get over the hump? Consider me buying the USC hype with Lincoln Riley and Caleb Williams, just not as a Playoff contender yet. The real question is if the Trojans can stand up in the trenches. Michigan State lost star running back Kenneth Walker III but added the 2020 Pac-12 offensive player of the year in former Colorado running back Jarek Broussard, and Mel Tucker’s program is rounding into form. This Spartans team could be better, even if the record is worse than last season’s 11-2 campaign.

Wisconsin hasn’t quite been its usual self in recent years. Will running back Braelon Allen and a new offensive coordinator make the difference for quarterback Graham Mertz? Will Kentucky be the second-best team in the SEC East? Quarterback Will Levis has NFL hype, but he has a new offensive coordinator. Will Pitt be more than a one-year wonder? The Panthers lost first-round pick Kenny Pickett at quarterback and Biletnikoff winner Jordan Addison at receiver, but they added former USC starting QB Kedon Slovis, who was named the starter on Wednesday, and talented Akron receiver Konata Mumpfield.

Coming off a Playoff appearance, Cincinnati keeps the top Group of 5 spot, but after the Bearcats lost nine NFL Draft picks, Houston is right behind them. Fresno State, with quarterback Jake Haener and his top targets back, could be in the mix for the New Year’s Six, as well.

Wake Forest played for the ACC title last year, but quarterback Sam Hartman’s future is uncertain after being ruled out indefinitely with a non-football medical condition. There is hope he could return this season, but it is obviously a huge loss. Watch out for the Ole Miss offense this season, with transfers at quarterback (Jaxson Dart), running back (Zach Evans, Ulysses Bentley IV), wide receiver (Jaylon Robinson, Malik Heath, Jordan Watkins) and tight end (Michael Trigg). Appalachian State opens with North Carolina at home in a chance to make a statement in one of the biggest games in school history.

UCF looks primed to make a jump this year with John Rhys Plumlee at quarterback and a plethora of offensive weapons around him, and the Knights should be in AAC contention again. Texas hoped to solve its 2021 problems with an influx of offensive line recruits, but how will Quinn Ewers look and can the defense tackle better? Can Florida, Florida State, TCU and Boise State return to form? The Gators and Horned Frogs have new coaches and reasons for excitement. The Seminoles have found success adding transfers and brought in a new crop with a lot of potential.

Which Auburn do we get in 2022? The one that started 6-2 or the one that finished 0-5? The offseason roster turnover and drama around head coach Bryan Harsin don’t help. Coastal Carolina and UTSA are coming off big 2021 seasons but have questions. For UTSA, it’s running back and defense. For Coastal, it’s basically everything but quarterback Grayson McCall, who broke the single-season FBS pass efficiency record last year. Marshall, a new addition to the Sun Belt, was dealt a blow this week with All-America candidate running back Rasheen Ali stepping away from the team for a period of time. Utah State is the defending Mountain West champion but must replace more than 30 touchdown catches from a year ago, and Air Force has several key players working their way back from offseason surgeries.

Cal finished 96th nationally in scoring offense last year but 32nd in scoring defense. Stanford finished outside the top 100 in both. A blip or something more concerning? The Cardinal program has been trending downward. Nebraska may have been the greatest 3-9 team in history last year, losing eight games by one possession. With Texas transfer Casey Thompson at quarterback, does luck come the other way this time? Scott Frost’s job depends on it. Indiana followed up a dream 2020 campaign with a dreadful 2021. Was that due to injuries or was 2020 a blip?

Western Kentucky has won nine games in two of the past three years, but most of the record-breaking offense from last year has moved on. Georgia State beat Tennessee in 2019, lost to Auburn in the final seconds last year and hosts North Carolina in Week 2 this year. Keep an eye out for that one. The MAC is wide-open as always — the past seven MAC championship games have featured 11 schools. NIU is the defending champ and brings a lot back, but Toledo led the MAC in scoring offense and defense. The Rockets have lost five MAC games by one possession over the past two years, costing them division titles. Central Michigan running back Lew Nichols III led the nation in rushing last year, and he’s back for Jim McElwain.

This group contains the bottom of the Power 5. Illinois showed some promise in Bret Bielema’s first year. Northwestern was dreadful last season, and the Week 0 game against Nebraska in Ireland could give us a sense if things are any better. Syracuse All-American running back Sean Tucker (1,496 yards in 2021) is a force, but can the Orange find help for him? Vanderbilt is always a tough situation, and the Commodores open with a Week 0 trip to Hawaii, a game they need to win to show progress. Kansas beat Texas last year and Lance Leipold’s rebuild (or, simply, build) appears to be making progress. Georgia Tech did hot-seat candidate Geoff Collins no favors with a nonconference schedule that includes Ole Miss, UCF (on the road) and Georgia, and the Yellow Jackets open with Clemson.

At the bottom of the Pac-12, Arizona went 1-11 last year but did sign a top-25 recruiting class and added Washington State QB transfer Jayden de Laura and UTEP receiver Jacob Cowing. Colorado, meanwhile, lost a lot of players to the transfer portal.

James Madison makes its debut here. The Dukes were a perennial FCS powerhouse, with an 88-18 record since 2014, but this was already going to be a bit of a rebuilding year with the loss of several top players and an open QB competition. It moves up a level to the FBS on top of that.

There are a lot of new coaches in here: Louisiana Tech (Sonny Cumbie), Georgia Southern (Clay Helton), Colorado State (Jay Norvell), Nevada (Ken Wilson), Temple (Stan Drayton), Hawaii (Timmy Chang), FIU (Mike MacIntyre), Akron (Joe Moorhead), UConn (Jim Mora), New Mexico State (Jerry Kill) and UMass (Don Brown). That’s what happens when you’re at the bottom of these rankings, and that’s always a reason for optimism, which we could all use before the games kick off.
