Weekend break là gì

"Vacation" và "holiday" là hai từ đồng nghĩa chỉ những ngày nghỉ. Tuy nhiên, không phải trường hợp nào hai từ này cũng có thể thay thế nhau. 

"Holiday" là ngày lễ chung

Khác biệt lớn nhất về ngữ nghĩa của hai từ này đó là người ta dùng holiday khi nói về ngày lễ được tổ chức bởi rất nhiều người, bao gồm cả những ngày lễ thuộc về tôn giáo như Christmas, Rosh Hashanah, Ramadan. Những ngày lễ quốc gia như quốc khánh (Independence Day) được gọi là holiday chứ không phải vacation. Tóm lại, nếu tất cả mọi người cùng không phải làm việc trong một ngày, người ta không gọi đó là vacation.

"Vacation" thường liên quan đến du lịch

Một cuộc hội thoại nhắc đến vacation thường tương tự như sau:

- I took a vacation last week. (Tuần trước tôi có kỳ nghỉ).

- Where did you go? (Bạn đã đi đâu vậy?) 

Lý do là vacation thường gắn với các chuyến du lịch. Trường hợp bạn có một kỳ nghỉ ở nhà, có một từ mới khá phổ biến trong 10 năm qua là "staycation". 

Tuy nhiên, bạn cần nhớ rằng các quy tắc phân biệt trên dành cho tiếng Anh - Mỹ. Người Anh sử dụng holiday cho cả hai trường hợp.

Những ngày nghỉ còn lại

Có một số ngày bạn không đi học, không đi làm nhưng không phải là holiday hay vacation. Chẳng hạn, bạn ở nhà một ngày chỉ để nghỉ ngơi, thư giãn, bạn sẽ gọi đó là gì? Trong trường hợp này, cách diễn đạt thích hợp nhất là "day off".
